An in-depth examination and elucidation of the teachings of the Church based on the writings of the holy fathers. Learn about the unchanging Orthodox Faith as it has been expounded by the apostles and their successors even up to modern times. From Saint Ignatius of Antioch (ca. 35-107) to Saint John Maximovitch (1896-1966), the Apostolic Tradition remains pure and untarnished.
Quoting the Church fathers extensively, Part 1 of the book deals with the Orthodox teachings concerning the triune God, His creation of all things, the fall of Adam and Eve, the Old Testament, how God prepared Old Israel for the coming of the Messiah, as well as an examination of the work of Jesus Christ the Savior, Who in His love redeemed the human race and conquered death by His own death and Resurrection.
Part 2 concerns the Church, Orthodox ecclesiology, and the work of the Holy Spirit under the new covenant. Always following the holy fathers, its chapters discuss the one Church as the only means of salvation for fallen humanity, the heresies that have reared their heads over the centuries in opposition to the truth of Christ, and the role of the Church—the body of Christ—which sanctifies, unites, recapitulates, and makes her children divine. Holy Baptism, the Eucharist, and all of the other Mysteries are covered at length. The all-holy Virgin Mary, herself the greatest symbol of the Church and the Mother of all Christians, is shown forth as the pinnacle of virtue and the preeminent intercessor among all the saints of the Church triumphant. The book concludes with a long chapter concerning the end times, the coming of Antichrist, and his persecution of the Church—all according to the prophecies and writings of the Church fathers—which ends with the ultimate triumph of Christ, Who shall raise from the dead and judge all men, revealing the heaven or hell which men’s dispositions have prepared for them, and enlightening the righteous forever with His divine energies, His uncreated light.
Throughout the book, heresies relating to the subject at hand, whether from Protestants or Roman Catholics, are refuted, and many contemporary issues are discussed from an Orthodox perspective.
